112 – Dug Out

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on February 22, 2010

We are pretty much dug out from the snow.  The runways at local airports were clear so we headed into the sky on Sunday.

106 – After the Snow

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on January 31, 2010

There were only a couple of inches of snow at the airport today, but the shady sides of the wings were covered with ice.  Even with a lot of brushing it didn’t melt in time for a flight.  The helicopter did a good job as a snow blower, however.

105 – Road Signs

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on January 24, 2010

I have seen this affect numerous times flying when at a low altitude early in the evening.  The sun is hitting road signs and one can see the colorful reflection from the air..  Yesterday was the first time I had a camera ready.  The other photo was taken in the turn to line up for the signs.  A nice flight.

95 – Another Nice Day for Flying

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on December 1, 2009

We headed to Georgetown Delaware on Sunday for our usual expensive lunch.  High clouds and a setting sun made the trip back scenic but difficult as we were flying directly into the sun most of the time.

90 – Hazy Day

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on November 22, 2009

At this time of the year we usually have very little haze in the sky.  Not today.  There was a low pressure system moving in from the South bringing moist air.  At times the visibility was down to three or four miles.  Still it was good to be up in the air.  The runway at Lancaster, PA certainly doesn’t look like it over a mile and a half long.

82 – Beautiful Day at the Airport

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on November 9, 2009

But, we didn’t fly.  We had a “no-go” maintenance issue.  Fortunately, I had my cameras and a long lens so we spent a pleasant day watching airplanes.

76 – Autumn From the Air

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on October 25, 2009

It was a nice day for flying today.  It was a tad hazy for spectacular photos, but not bad.  The photo shows the northern part of the Catoctin range just west of Frederick, Maryland.  I have developed the urge for a photography port on the window on the right side of the airplane.  This is an unfortunate and expensive urge, but the old plastic windows do not allow good photographs and make all sorts of reflections.

66 – Lancaster, PA

Posted in Aviation by lwroffee on September 20, 2009

There were unusual southeast surface winds over most parts of the Mid-Atlantic States today which made for unusual approaches to airports.  We passed just north of Lancaster, PA before landing at its airport.  Nice day for flying.

62 – Airplane Gawking

This is what pilots do after the $200.00 lunch.  In this case it is a nicely restored T-6, an old WWI training airplane.
